Protecting Your Hands & Nails Against The Weather!
Protecting Your Hands & Nails Against The Weather!
So as I’m writing this, the rain is torrential and I have to say it - summer is
over. We can’t ignore the fact that it is September, it is England and winter is
just around the corner. With that in mind and as the nights get darker, it’s
essential that we take a look at the changing weather and ensure that we alter
our beauty and skincare regime accordingly. You might think our focus of this
blog is on skin, hair and make up. Not this time!
We often completely ignore our hands and nails when it comes to skincare
and beauty. Yes, you may regularly have your nails done (can’t be without a
fresh mani), but how often do you ensure that you alter your skincare routine
in the winter to include your hands too?
After a year or two of completely destroying our skin with hand sanitiser, and
with colder weather definitely on its way, it’s essential that for soft, healthy
looking hands and nails, you protect the skin there too.
When we don’t have our nails done, they can be prone to breaking, or looking
dry and brittle. Not to mention the flaky cuticles and nail beds! You don’t
always need to have a fresh set of OPI in order to have healthy looking
hands, but here are our tips on how to protect your hands and nails this winter
for ultimate nail growth.
Invest in a nourishing hand cream
You can literally smell the strength of alcohol in any hand sanitiser, and as
we’ve recently been smothering ourselves in it at every given opportunity, our
skin can feel incredibly dry and textured. If you don’t know by now - when your
skin is dry it is also more prone to forming lines and wrinkles - something we
don’t often think about when it comes to our hands until we’ve matured and
our skin visually shows its lack of elasticity. Investing in a deeply nourishing
hand cream can not only encourage the maintenance of elastin and collagen,
it will keep the skin deeply hydrated, ensuring there’s no wrinkles on their
way!
Cuticle Care
Looking after your cuticles is incredibly underrated. Trimming your cuticles
and regularly applying cuticle oil has many benefits, starting with the
aesthetics. When you trim your cuticles, your nail beds will appear smoother,
with the nail itself looking longer. Applying cuticle oil also stimulates the
circulation around your nail, which encourages growth and strength, as the oil
provides a barrier against any external traumas.
Find a Gentle Varnish Remover
Finding a gentle, high quality varnish remover is really important when it
comes to nail health. Using a cheap, strong remover can actually cause more
harm than good, as potent ingredients can strip the nails of its natural oils,
causing them to become dry and weak with a higher chance of breakage.
Wear a Clear Polish
If you want to give your nails a break from varnish or gels, ensure that you at
least apply a clear coat of strengthening polish. Doing so will protect the nail
from any bangs or breakages, whilst giving them a boost of nutrients to
encourage growth and strength.
Apply a Hand Mask
This might sound a bit strange, but we all know how relaxing a hand massage
is. Yet how often do we give one to ourselves?! More and more hand mask
products are hitting the stores, and we can't recommend a little hand-pamper
evening enough. Start with a gentle exfoliation with a hand or body scrub on
the hands to remove any dead or flaky skin. Then, wash off and apply a hand
glove or nourishing hand mask before finishing with your favourite cream and
cuticle oil.
So with our top tips in mind, make sure that this winter your ready to keep
your hand and nail health in tip-top condition. If you’re not a fan of doing your
hand-massages at home, then pop down to the salon for one of our Luxury
Nail Treatments, which includes a length hand and nail massage to
encourage blood circulation.
We also offer our Luxury Soak Off, which allows us to ensure your nails are
protected completely when it comes to removing any varnish or gels. We have
the hand-mask part covered too, as our Collagen Gloves are available as an
additional add-on to any manicure treatment.
